What is geriatrics?

 

Rehabilitation, support and accompaniment for the elderly. Occupational therapy in geriatrics is determined by diseases that are subject to constant change due to the aging process.

The typical clinical pictures are diseases such as:

• Strokes

• Parkinson's disease

• Dementia of various origins, e.g. Alzheimer's disease, depression, psychoses and neuroses

• Degenerative and rheumatic diseases of the muscle and nervous system, condition after fractures, amputations and tumor removal

 

Multiple diseases are often present. This requires from us therapists extensive medical knowledge, a lot of empathy and a high degree of flexibility in the application of the therapy concepts.

 

Treatment?

 

In addition to the methods already mentioned in the other departments (see Neurology, Psychiatry), the following treatment concepts are used:

 

• ADL training (everyday training)

• Brain performance training

• Daily structure build-up

• Self-help training (e.g. for getting around, washing, getting dressed, doing simple household chores)

• Support in the psychological processing of illness, mostly by strengthening self-esteem (sense of achievement)

• Creative therapy / occupational therapy

 

The treatment of seniors takes place in the practice or at home. We also carry out visits to old people's and nursing homes. In this case, we will bring the necessary therapy materials with us.
