What is Orthopedics / rheumatology?

 

In this specialty, occupational therapy treats patients of all ages with disorders from the fields of orthopedics, traumatology and rheumatology. These are, for example, congenital malformations of the trunk, arms and hands, signs of wear and tear and diseases of the spine and other large joints, inflammatory and degenerative joint diseases from the rheumatic type, injuries on bones, muscles, tendons and nerves, especially those of the arms and the trunk.

Occupational therapy treatment in this area includes for example:

 

  • Exercises for flexibility, muscle strength, endurance, resilience and sensitivity

  • Avoidance of secondary damage such as contractures

  • Training in everyday activities with a view to personal, domestic and professional independence

  • Advice and training on joint protection

  • Hardening of amputation stockings and training with the prosthesis

  • Production of special hand and bracers

  • Advice on suitable aids and changes in the home and professional environment
